Troll Culture by Stefan Krappitz

Master thesis turned online book looks at the various aspects of trolling, both good and bad, with the online version formatted to look like a 4chan page.

Below is taken from the introduction (with bad spelling intact):

Trolling is a phenomenon, that is normally covered in a very biased way. The usual tenor seems to be, that trolls are neckbearded basementdwellers without a life, or stupid bored teenagers that just hit puberty.
Hardly anyone has written about trolls in a positive way, other thatn the trolls themselves and most people wouldn’t even go as far to associate trolling with the word culture, thus ignoring early online-communities like alt.flame.

Altough the word “to troll” was propably not mentioned in this context until the usenet of the early 90s, similar behaviour could even be seen in Socrates, who lures others into thinking of themselves as savants or scholars who then proceed to teach the, now famous, philosopher. This went on until Socrates asked questions, that questioned the whole philosophy of the other, leading to his realization to not know anything. This cannot be compared entirely to the trolls of modern days, but the phenomenon was there for a long time.
The Internet, however, amplified this behavior with anonymity, ephemerality and the following disinhibition of the mind.

In this thesis, I want to describe the phenomenon of trolling, as a culture.
By respecting the trolls, I wish to give a neutral summary to anybody interested in learning about it.

This is your child before and after one year of exposure to a new street drug knows as “The Animes.” Police forces are still researching the sources of this substance, but it is known to be very addictive and its side effects are nearly irreversible.
Signs that your child may be under the influence of “The Animes” include:
making an account on deviantART.com - While it appears innocent, this website is actually a black market for different types of “The Animes.” It contains the highest concentration of animes abusers worldwide.
changing their typing habits - If your Honors student starts typing sentences that substitute “teh” for “the” or uses asterisks for actions (i.e., *noms on you XD*) or starts adding -chan to the end of names, “The Animes” have most likely gotten to a near-irreversible state that requires years of therapy.
a sudden interest in Top Ramen - In it’s early stages, your child or loved one may request to eat instant ramen noodles up to a few times a week. At this stage, it is still possible to fix some of the damage “The Animes” have caused. However, if they begin using chopsticks with every meal, you may have no choice but to lock them in their room and confiscate all Hot Topic products.

If someone didn’t have any pride, wouldn’t they also be lacking in self-confidence? If someone was free of greed, wouldn’t they have trouble supporting their family? And if people didn’t envy one another, wouldn’t they stop inventing new things?

Me: How do you feel about songbirds?
Natasha: OH GOD I HATE THEM THEY MAKE THE WORST NOISES
Me: Hahahaha, I am sorry.
Natasha: Do you like them?
Me: Yes, but they're low on the list seeing as there are felines and cephalopods.
Natasha: Haha, I know what you mean. What can compete with felines and Cephalopoda?
Me: I'll tell you when I know of its/their existence, ha. I love finding people who like cuttlefish. It's like fangirls finding each other but a bit subdued.
Natasha: If it's subdued you must be doing it wrong. It's not subdued over here. It's screaming AHHH CUTTLEFISH and running into things.

WHY IS EVERYTHING ON MY DASH SO CUTE TODAY

Shit, I JUST read his story in Tales from Jabba’s Palace yesterday. WHAT ARE THE ODDS

I got into Star Wars as a kid almost entirely for the Jabba’s Palace chapter. I primarily collected toys of him and his cronies, and played with them in my own personal canon; one where Luke was eaten by the Rancor, Han was re-frozen and Leia never got a chance to strangle Jabba. Life around the palace just continued with all its internal struggles and cool monsters while the Empire was off blowing up other planets; just something Max Rebo might read about in his holo-news and bore everyone with.

High Speed Liquid Flowers by Jack Long

These high speed photographs of colored water are captured in a way to mimic the shape of blooms, leaves, and even pots. Photographer Jack Long creates cocktails of dyes, thickeners, and pigments for each component of the shot and then blasts them through a customized mechanism before snapping a perfectly timed capture.

From NASA:

This still SDO image was created by applying additional processing to enhance the structures visible. While there is no scientific value to this processing, it does result in a beautiful, new way of looking at the sun. The original frames are in the 171 Angstrom wavelength of extreme ultraviolet. This wavelength shows plasma in the solar atmosphere, called the corona, that is around 600,000 Kelvin. The loops represent plasma held in place by magnetic fields. They are concentrated in “active regions” where the magnetic fields are the strongest. These active regions usually appear in visible light as sunspots. The events in this video represent 24 hours of activity on September 25, 2011.”
